Most people we work with tell us that they feel on top of their financial plan. But when it comes to tax, there is often a quieter, less certain feel about it.
A feeling that decisions are being made about their finances without anyone quite looking at the whole picture
This is the gap we are trying to close.
We think your WealthMap® should always come first.
It sets out what you are trying to achieve, the decisions you are likely to face along the way, and how those decisions interact over many years. Investment advice, pensions, cash flow, estate planning, and tax should all sit behind that plan, not operate independently of it.
Tax shouldn’t just be about the tax return
For many people, their relationship with tax advice is largely reactive.
The tax year ends. Information is collected. A tax return is prepared. A liability is calculated. The return is submitted.
That work is important, but it is only one part of the picture.
For many Barnaby Cecil clients, decisions made throughout the year can have significant tax consequences: how income is taken, when investments are sold, how pensions are funded, how a business is structured, how assets are passed to the next generation, or simply the timing of a major financial decision.
The real value comes from thinking about those decisions before they happen, not simply reporting them afterwards.
Joining the dots
At present, when a client needs tax advice, we introduce them to an accountant or tax adviser we trust.
There are some excellent advisers out there. But the process can still feel fragmented.
Your financial planner understands your WealthMap. Your accountant understands your tax return. You understand what you are ultimately trying to achieve.
Ideally, those three things should be connected.
That is why we are launching Barnaby Cecil Tax Limited.
The objective is not simply to bring tax returns in-house. It is to make tax planning a more integrated part of the wider financial planning process.
Your WealthMap remains the plan. The tax work then sits behind it.
That could mean your financial planner and tax adviser discussing an issue together, identifying something that needs attention earlier, or making sure that a decision being considered within your WealthMap is looked at from both a financial-planning and tax perspective before it is implemented.
A small difference that could become a very valuable one
Sometimes the value might be substantial.
Sometimes it might be much simpler, and just as important.
A 15-minute conversation with a qualified tax adviser at the right moment can prevent a mistake, answer a question, or give you the confidence to make a decision you have been putting off.
That kind of timely, joined-up thinking is exactly what we are trying to make more available to our clients.
We will build BC Tax carefully. From 1 September, we will begin offering tax services to a limited number of Barnaby Cecil clients, supported by a new Chartered Tax Manager.
We deliberately want to start small because we want to do this properly and give each person the attention they deserve.
Those of you who come to us early will have the most opportunity to shape how the service develops.
We believe there is a better way to combine financial planning and tax expertise, and we would like to prove it.
If you are a Barnaby Cecil client and would like to explore whether BC Tax might be right for you, we would be glad to hear from you.
Because ultimately, this isn't about building another tax practice.
It's about making your financial plan work better.
